5 Tips for Better Crockpot Meals

A slow cooker is one of the most forgiving kitchen tools out there, but a few small habits make a real difference in how your meals turn out.

1. Layer ingredients correctly

Put root vegetables like potatoes and carrots on the bottom — they take longer to cook and benefit from sitting closest to the heat source, with meat and quicker-cooking ingredients on top.

2. Don't lift the lid

Every time you lift the lid, you let out heat that takes 20-30 minutes to build back up. Resist checking on it until it's actually time.

3. Brown meat first when you have time

It's not required, but a quick sear before adding meat to the crockpot adds noticeably more flavor than going straight in raw — worth it on mornings when you have an extra five minutes.

4. Avoid watery sauces

Slow cookers don't reduce liquid the way a stovetop does, so use less liquid than a regular stovetop recipe would call for — vegetables also release their own moisture as they cook.

5. Add dairy and delicate herbs at the end

Milk, cream, and fresh herbs like basil can break down or lose flavor over a long cook. Stir them in during the last 15-30 minutes instead of at the start.
